Living in Hawaii – Fun Facts

Living on Maui is a dream come true for many. The island enjoys warm and sunny weather almost all year long, and regardless of where you choose to live on Maui, you are always just a short drive to the ocean. If you’re into water sports, scuba diving, snorkelling, or surfing Maui is the place for you! If you are planning a move to Maui soon, you have probably done enough research about what to expect in this tropical paradise. But there may be some things you still don’t know about living on this wonderful island. Here are some fun facts about living in Hawaii:

1. The Aloha Spirit
The word Aloha is one of the first words you will often hear as soon as you arrive in Hawaii. It’s a local greeting that can mean hello or goodbye. But aloha is more than just a greeting. It is a significant part of the Hawaiian culture and one of the unique characteristics of the islands.
The Aloha Spirit is described as an innate sense of loving things unconditionally. It’s a way of acknowledging ones symbiotic relationship towards everything around them and recognizing their space within it.
You will understand the real spirit of aloha once you start living in Hawaii. If you visit a neighbor’s house, they will welcome you with open arms. Sometimes, you will arrive home to a bag of freshly picked mangoes lying on your porch. A moment of aloha can also be as simple as exchanging smiles with anyone you meet on the street. So important is the Aloha Spirit that the State of Hawaii even made it an official law to follow by all within the islands.

2. The pace of life is slower
The pace of life in Hawaii is slower compared to what you might find in many of the major cities around the world. For most who choose to make Maui their home, this is a huge perk of living on an island in the middle of the Pacific. One of the main reasons people move to Maui is to relax and enjoy a more laidback life. If you are a retiree and would like to spend your retirement years in Hawaii, then the state’s slower pace would be to your advantage. Here, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor without the stresses that come with a fast-paced urban area. This  slower pace also allows for a stronger connection with nature, which creates a more balanced life. Relax at your Maui beachfront property and adapt to a slower life on the island, enjoying the ebb and flow of the clear pacific waters from the comfort of your lanai!

3. It’s a tradition to share nature’s bounty
Hawaii is blessed with some of the most incredible natural resources on Earth. Thus, nature has been an important part of the Hawaiian culture, and part of the local tradition is to share nature’s bounty.  For instance, if your backyard trees produce plenty of mangos, it would be neighbourly to pack a few in a box and share the wealth with your neighbours.

4. The beach is never far away
Another fun fact about living in Hawaii is that the beach is never far away. When you live on Maui there is no need to plan for a many hours long drive to the coast; in most places you’ll find a beach just mere minutes away! And, if you’re lucky enough to live in a beachfront home in Maui, then the beach will be just a few steps away from your property! In addition to wonderfully days spent lounging atop Maui’s wonderful white sands, living close to the beach can also mean health benefits; studies show that surrounding yourself with nature could improve your physical and mental health.

5. Ohana
Maui is one of the best islands to raise a family in Hawaii. Aside from being blessed with natural beauty, the island offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and cultural learning experiences; allowing many fantastic and unique ways to spend quality time with your loved ones. While many places on Maui offer a great many fantastic experiences, for those looking to relocate here I would recommend considering any of the great many fantastic homes and condominiums in the upscale area of Kapalua.

Family Friendly Beaches on Maui

“Best beach in the world.” When living on Maui, you will find that many a beach here fit that exclamation to a tee. Pristine sands, warm tides, and gentle ocean breezes are available to enjoy all across our island home, all year round! Best of all, many are perfect for family’s of all ages to enjoy. Here is a selection of wonderful Maui beaches that many would say are best in the world for family fun:

Kamaole Beach Park III
While all of Kihei’s Kamaole Beach Parks make great options for family outings, Kamaole Beach Park III is perhaps the best of them all! In addition to a very large sandy beach, Kamaole Beach Park III also features an enormous grassy park area filled with benches, grills, kids play areas, and much more. As an added bonus, this beach park is just a few minutes away from takeout restaurants and grocery stores – perfect for grabbing that 1 picnic item you forgot to pack in the morning!

Baby Beach (Spreckelsville)
Tucked away in the historic residential enclave of Spreckelsville, Baby Beach is a fantastic option for those looking to enjoy an outing to the beach in Central Maui. A healthy sized stretch of white sand leads out to a natural lagoon of waist high waters calmed by an exposed stretch of reef. While this beach is a great, safe option to take your kids, you will want to enjoy Baby Beach early as once the day wears and winds increase, you and your family may be pelted by gusts of coarse sands licked up by the afternoon winds.

Baby Beach (Lahaina)
Considered by many to be the best beach for families in the area, Lahaina’s Baby Beach gets its name from the fact that it’s a great beach to take your toddler to. Thanks to an offshore reef, large waves are kept from reaching the coastline, keeping the waters here calm throughout the day. As a bonus, the water here is also very shallow for quite a ways out; giving you and your young ones ample space to wade and explore as tropical fish and sea life float by.

Kapalua Bay
Soft white sands, calm blue waters, amazing sunsets; some might say Kapalua Bay has it all! Often heralded as one of the world’s best beaches, Kapalua Bay offers something for every beachgoer. Lounge with your family on the pristine warm sands, take a stroll alone the adjacent walking path, or bring your gear and go snorkeling!

Wailea Beach
Fronting two of the best resorts in South Maui, Wailea Beach is known for its long stretches of golden sand and warm blue waters. A great place for swimming, boogie boarding, sunbathing, or strolling; this beach is best enjoyed with your family earlier in the day, prior to the arrival of afternoon winds and larger crowds.

While these are just a few of the “best of the best” beaches on Maui, there are many, many more fantastic options available throughout the island; many a simple stroll away from your new luxury Maui home! Enjoy!
