The Maui Classical Music Festival Kicks Off This May

An exciting and beautiful event is coming to Maui this May and you will not want to miss it.
March 30, 2018

Perhaps you are familiar with Maui’s Annual Classical Music Festival; but if you’ve never heard of it, then today is your lucky day. This creative festival brings some of the best in classical performances right here to our little island home.

This year, there will be new performers added to the acclaimed lineup, including a young guitarist who is often referred to as “achingly beautiful.” His name is Colin Davin and he will be visiting the stage along with festival violinist Benny Kim. Returning from the 2017 Classical Music Festival will be pianist Rohan De Silva, a winner of a special prize as the Best Accompanist at the 1990 9th International Tchaikovsky Competition. Also added to the list this year will be Peter Wiley, a cellist who performed with the Guarneri String Quartet from 2001 to 2009.

This classical concert series will also feature three husband and wife combinations in 2018, including cellist Edward Arron and pianist Jeewon Park; violinist Scott St. John and violinist Sharon Wei; and violinist Yizhak Schotten and pianist Katherine Collier. Schotten and Collier have been the festival’s music directors since it first started 37 years ago. It was then that this unique festival was born in Kapalua. At the time; however, it was known as the Kapalua Music Festival. The name was eventually changed and today this festival is also a part of a non-profit organization that hopes to bring classical music to historically-recognized churches on the island.

This May there will be performances starting on May 4 at the Makawao Union Church, followed by an event on May 7 and May 11 at the Keawalai Congregational Church in Makena. There will also be a special performance in Hana on May 9 at the Wananalua Congregational Church.

If you’re planning on attending and are also looking for more information about Maui, then make sure to take a look at my Maui Info section.
