Experience the remarkable tale of the island of Maui throughout history during a night at the Maui Theater watching the acclaimed Ulalena!

Ulalena runs Monday through Thursday during the month of January and February, and tells the story of the birth, transformation and rebirth of the island. Using Hawaiian legend, traditional and modern dancing, and integrating moving lighting and more, Ulalena is one of the most sought-after happenings on Maui. The show not only entertains but also educates the audience about the creation of the island, the story of Polynesian wayfinders and the trials and effect of western contact. The show’s theme is really one about the circle of life and how Hawaiian culture and history has evolved over the years.

The name Ulalena is inspired by the Ulalena rain, which is featured throughout the performance. This rain is associated with the island of Maui and is mentioned in the Hawaiian chant of creation- the kumulipo. Ulalena is the reddish-yellow tinted drizzle that is revealed during twilight and concludes the show in the end. In beginning, Ulalena starts with a captivating performance explaining the catalyst for life for Hawaiian people using the beloved Polynesian plant known as taro. Later on, the talented artists and performers continue to grab your attention by weaving in Hawaiian legends and folklore that are explained through song, dance, chants and visuals.  From stories about Goddess Mo’o (lizards) and strong Hawaiian ali’i (royalty), to narratives about the Hawaiian Monarchy and the culture-to-date, Ulalena delivers Hawaiian history like you’ve never seen it before as it attempts to explore the relationships between people, nature, and mythology.

Described as a “must-see” by visitors and residents alike, the show has also received recognition from publications of clout. National Geographic has described Ulalena as a “stunning theatrical sensation” and was voted the “Best Live Show in Hawaii” by Hawaii Magazine in 2015. Many say there’s no other show like it, as it explores the life’s journey and the history and culture of Hawaiian people throughout time.

Doors open at 5 p.m. each evening. Ticket prices start at $59 for adults and $29 for children (kamaaina rates are available).  You may also purchase tickets for the new Ulalena Luau Dinner with award-winning Hawaiian food by Poi by the Pound. The Ulalena Luau Dinner menu includes Hawaiian-style kalua pork, barbecue teriyaki chicken, white rice, macaroni salad, mixed green salad, dinner rolls and dessert.
