If you are staying at one of Jo’s properties in the Kapalua area, you are within minutes from Maui’s best town! Lahaina, also on the West side of Maui, is rich with Hawaiian culture. In the early nineteenth century, Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii and the island’s number one whaling destination.
Lahaina is a beach town situated just below the West Maui Mountains along the coast. The area has a very dry climate, which makes it a fantastic place to lounge, tan and enjoy water activities. The town was once known as Lele, meaning “relentless sun.” You’ll notice that the area is indeed much drier than Kapalua and Kaanapali, which often receive light showers and are home to very different plant life.
Lahaina is the largest town on Maui with a thriving scene of day activities and nightlife. This charming town is the perfect place to enjoy art galleries or go shopping on Front Street and the Lahaina Outlet Mall. Lahaina is also home to world-class chefs, local restaurants, and lively bars.
The island has one main commuter route to and from Lahaina on Honoapiilani Highway. This road offers stunning views of the mountains, Pacific Ocean, and neighboring islands. There is however, a “back route,” which is fantastic for a day trip. Kahekili Highway features lush plant life, deep green mountains, the famous Nakalele blowhole and sweeping panoramic ocean views.
In downtown Lahaina, the congregation place is undoubtedly Front Street. It’s worth taking a leisurely day to walk around Front Street, sit by the harbor and enjoy the view with some Ululani’s Shave Ice.
For beach activities, head to black rock for a snorkel or book a boat tour that leaves from the Lahaina harbor. Tours head to quite a few different spots around the island including Molokini, Turtle Town, and Coral Gardens. During the winter, Lahaina is one of the best spots in the world for whale watching.
