Honolua Bay

Outdoor fun in West Maui
November 04, 2016

There is an incredible amount of fun outdoor activities in West Maui. A day of beach hopping, snorkeling, scuba diving, stand up paddle boarding or surfing is easy when you are surrounded by the stunning, deep-blue Pacific Ocean. Perhaps one of the most famous locations in West Maui for water activities is Honolua Bay.  In Hawaiian, Honolua means “two harbors,” which represents its history as a dock to ship and receive products.

If you live in one of Kapalua's many luxury condos, then you're only a few minutes away. The walk from the parking area through the lush green tropical forest to the shore will take your breath away. The greenery is stunning and the singing of tropical birds adds to the calming environment. The beach is rocky so be sure to take an appropriate pair of shoes and perhaps a chair if you’d like to sit comfortably.

During the summer, Honolua Bay is perfect for an early morning snorkel and during the winter, for surfing. Although the weather on Maui remains warm and sunny year-round, the winter season is synonymous with high surf. Honolua is known to have the best surf breaks in the world, offering a long ride in. After enjoying the ocean, sit back and watch the beautiful orange sunset, which sets conveniently on the West Side of the island.

With the winter soon upon us, get ready for whale watching! Whales are regularly spotted on the West side of the island. From Lahaina to Kaanapali to Kapalua, West Maui is one of the best whale watching locations in the world, thanks to a shallow channel that lies between neighboring islands, Lanai and Molokai.  Honolua is the perfect place to whale watch from the shore. Pack a picnic and enjoy the whales dancing in the distance. Honolua even has a lookout where you can stare out at the vast Pacific Ocean from high upon the cliffs.

Honolua is an area of significant cultural and environmental value for locals. It is considered a reserve, home to the Mokuleia Marine Life Conservation District, which means the bay is protected. Fishing or taking home any of the natural landscape is “kapu” -- forbidden. As a result, you can enjoy a completely natural environment, with an abundance of colorful corals and fish to swim along with.  With perks to enjoy year-round, Honolua is the perfect getaway for your day trip.
