Cliff House on Namalu Bay

Cliff House at Kapalua

The Kapalua area is world renowned for its amazing beaches and rugged cliffs. Driving along the West Maui coast you have a panoramic view of the breathtakingly blue Pacific Ocean.

Past Kaanapali and Napili is Kapalua, where you’ll find Cliff House. Cliff House is something of a local secret, perfect for the adventurous traveler! Just north of Kapalua Bay sits Cliff House, a rocky outpost overlooking turquoise Namalu Bay. Gazing out past Namalu bay into the distance is a clear view of Molokai and Lanai.

Here locals enjoy sun tanning, snorkeling and jumping off the boulders. Depth is anywhere from 10 to 40 feet. Please proceed with caution! Summer is the best time to snorkel here because large winter swells can make this area less accessible. For swimmers and snorkelers, green sea turtles are a common sighting, along with a myriad of other Hawaiian sea creatures such as unicorn fish, tang, eels and even manta ray!

The destination is named after the two-story house sitting on the cliffs, which is operated by beachfront Montage Kapalua Bay. The Montage describes the house as “a waterfront venue to remember” and indeed, there is no place so open and yet so intimate. This unusual house perched above the rocky cliffs was built in the 1940s as a facility for the managers of the Honolua Plantation and was recently restored.

Cliff House is hidden away past Merriman’s fine dining restaurant and before The Ritz-Carlton and luxury Coconut Grove condominiums. Follow the Lower Honoapiilani Road and take a left at Bay Drive, right after the Spa Montage at Kapalua. You’ll know you’re in the right area when you spot the famous Cook Pine trees. These incredibly tall and skinny pines were introduced to Hawaii by Captain Cook himself for boat timber. Past the hotel is a beach access parking lot. Walk towards the ocean and you’ll find a scenic dirt trail that leads you south towards Cliff House.

Adventure awaits you on Maui. Whether you are on the lookout for a luxury oceanfront property or the ultimate vacation rental condo, contact real estate specialist Jo Dorner today and be sure to visit Cliff House!
