The Kapalua area is known for its luxury shopping, dining, and stunning beaches. But did you know there is also a vast Kapalua Trail System? These trails provide ample exercise and breathtaking views! A hike through Kapalua's trail system is a hike through its history. The trails wind through an arboretum, across ridges, and on an old golf course. There is much flora and fauna to experience on your hike as well. You will see beautiful plants only found on Maui as you wind through these forested lands with views of the sparkling Pacific ocean.
Kapalua Coastal Trail
This trail winds along the ocean's edge through the Kapalua Resort. It starts at famous Kapalua Bay and extends past Oneloa Beach, D.T. Fleming Beach Park, and finally ends at the legendary Honolua Bay. In the winter, Honolua Bay sees large swells and many surfers, while during the summer time when the water is calmer, you will see many snorkelers exploring the beautiful reef. The Kapalua Coastal Trail is 3.5 miles and a great way to get a close look at the Kapalua Resort.
Village Walking Trails
On the site of Kapalua's former golf course, these trails give hikers the opportunity to view the magnificent Mauna Kahalawai (The West Maui Mountains) from a unique place. Looking at the mountain's grandeur and walking through history, you will be treated to a truly serene experience. There is even a hidden lake on this trail! With three different routes, there is something for every ability level.
Honolua Ridge & Maunalei Arboretum
These trails are accessible only by shuttle which you can catch at the Kapalua Village Center. The shuttle will take you high up on the West Maui Mountains to the Maunalei Arboretum which was created 80 years ago by D. T. Fleming. It is said that he traveled the world collecting plant and tree species that he liked and brought them back to Maui to plant on this mountain top. This trail also has three different routes providing flexibility.
Mahana Ridge Trail
Once again, you will need to utilize the Kapalua Village Center shuttle to get you to the starting point: Maunalei Arboretum. This trail is the most challenging in the system and perhaps the most rewarding. It is over 7 miles of slope toward the ocean and the views from this trail are incredible, which include gulches that seem to fall into the Pacific. You may even be able to see neighboring islands and get a panoramic view of the area. The trail meanders down the ridge and ends at D.T. Fleming Beach Park. This hike is an amazing way to tie history together by walking from D.T. Fleming's Arboretum through old pineapple fields, down to the park in named in his honor.
The Kapalua Trail System is a great way to spend a day, and a wonderful setting for a morning or evening jog. Keep in mind that the trails are only open from sunrise to sunset.
