D.T. Fleming Beach

Kapalua Beach has been ranked third this year in "Dr. Beach's" top 10 list for beaches in the United States. But it is certainly not the only beach in the area - not even the only award winning beach. In 2006 D.T. Fleming Beach made the top of this same list. It is located a bit further along Honoapiilani Highway than Kapalua Bay, and is the main beach for the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua.

Fleming Beach was named for David Fleming. Originally from Scotland, David Fleming was the first to experiment with the growing of pineapple in West Maui. Pineapple grew commercially in West Maui for over a century, but production ceased in 2010.

Fleming Beach is popular with surfers and body boarders because of large winter swells, but there can be strong rip currents and large waves, so be careful. There are some amenities and a lifeguard substation.

Napili Bay
Just next to Kapalua Beach is Napili Bay Beach. Slightly larger and more open, Napili Bay is also popular with body boarders.  There is an outer reef that helps protect it from most swells, so this is also a great swimming and snorkeling beach. There are fewer amenities than Fleming Beach, but it offers a great place to relax, watch for whales during the winter months, and watch the sun set into the Pacific.

Oneloa Beach
Oneloa Beach is located between Kapalua Bay and D.T. Fleming Beach. It is surrounded mostly by oceanfront Maui homes and is not as easy to get to, so is often the less crowded of the three beaches.  When the water is calm, there can be good snorkeling on both sides of the bay. However when the water is rough and the surf is up, you should take care. Still, if you are looking for a somewhat less crowded spot to sunbathe, Oneloa is an excellent option.

This is by no means all there is to Kapalua, a bit further along is Honolua Bay, one of the best snorkel spots on Maui, and part of the Honolua-Mokuleia Bay Marine Life Conservation district. But we've run out of time to talk about the beaches -- it's time to go! Now where did I leave my sunscreen...
