If you continue farther along West Maui, past Kaanapali, you will come to Kapalua. Like Kaanapali, Kapalua has a history in agriculture. In the late 1800s and early 1900s the area was known as the Honolua Ranch and was planted with coffee, taro, aloe, mango, and in 1912, Pineapples.
The Maui Pineapple Company was founded in 1932, later to become Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc. The company's president, Colin C. Cameron envisioned a master-planned resort community and Kapalua was born. (In addition to a sanctuary for man, Colin Cameron saw the importance of preserving the area as a sanctuary for nature as well. In 1992 nearly 9,000 acres of West Maui was granted to The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii.)
Today, in addition to luxury Maui homes and resorts, Kapalua is also the home to many luxury condominiums, including The Ritz Kapalua Hotel Suites, the Residences on Kapalua Bay, The Ironwoods, Coconut Grove, Kapalua Bay Villas, Kapalua Ridge Villas, and the Kapalua golf villas.
And unsurprisingly, it's also the location of two of Maui's best golf courses: The Bay Course at Kapalua, and the Plantation Course at Kapalua.
The older of the two, the Bay Course opened in 1975. Designed by Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane, it has some of the most majestic views and locations of any course in Hawaii. From the cliff side 5th hole, to the two seaside holes, and the views of the ocean and Molokai, the Bay Course is one you'll want to experience more than once. Amenities of this 18 hole, par 72 course are club rentals, driving range, pro shop and a restaurant.
On a group of islands known for their Golf Courses, to be the best of those is truly an achievement. The Plantation Course is recognized as the best golf course in Hawaii by Gold Digest Magazine. And each year the Plantation Course opens the PGA Tour's season with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Kapalua has been the home of this event since 1999, each year bringing professionals and amateurs together. The tour also brings dollars for Maui's charities; donating more than $5.3 million since its inception. Some of this year beneficiaries were the Boy Scouts of America, Maui County Council, Friends of the Children's Justice Center, Hale Makua Health Services, the J. Walter Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui, and the Lahainaluna High School Foundation.
The Plantation Course is 18 holes and a par 73. It includes club rentals, driving range, pro shop, and a restaurant.
